In articles like this, I usually do a little introduction to tell people about a piece of media that they maybe don’t know about. But like, is that really necessary for this one?
Magic: The Gathering is great for fantasy cosplayers—as I have pointed out multiple times—but besides a few cards, it’s never had much to appeal to the science fiction fans. And though the two are often lumped together when talking about genres, they are very different in a lot of ways.
SecUnit from The Murderbot Diaries feels like an easy choice for a cosplay. But the visual references we’ve had are the covers of the books. We can’t really get into the details.
Some cosplays just feel served on a silver platter. This is one of them. The Fantastic Four are back, and this time they’re part of an anachronistic MCU project that seems to be aiming for a completely different vibe than a lot of the other movies.
It’s cold outside. I live in Florida, and though most people wouldn’t consider the temperature that bad here, it still feels cold to me. And it got me thinking about characters that have snow/ice powers, or even just have that as a theme. It’s visually distinct, certainly. Which dovetails quite nicely into cosplay.
Sometimes, a pop culture figure hits the scene—either because they feature in a new project, or even an adaptation—and instantly signals that they’re going to be a cosplay mainstay.
I said I’d do more of these lists—and I meant it. Here are five more Planeswalkers from Magic: The Gathering that would be cool to cosplay.
Five years ago—yes, really—I wrote an article saying that Magic: The Gathering is a great media property for cosplay. But I never gave a list of some ideas. That was a massive oversite on my part. So, I figured I’d do something about it by going over five Magic characters that would make for an interesting cosplay challenge.
I’ve seen a lot of impressive cosplays now. Stuff so show-accurate it’s actually astonishing it’s not a costume made by the television crew. I’ve seen cosplays that are basically art pieces, taking the idea of characters and changing them in fascinating ways.
But the thing I find most impressive about cosplayers is when they make suits move that shouldn’t possibly be able to move.
Last year, we did a list of five easy-to-cosplay aliens from Doctor Who. But some people like difficult cosplays. So, we’re revisiting this topic, but a little differently. I’ve found four quite complex aliens from New Who. Like, these are intense.
