There are a few franchises great for cosplayers. Marvel and D.C. are the classic choices—as they have a huge catalog of characters—but, with a new series on Netflix soon, and a growing fanbase even now: have you considered Magic: The Gathering?

Yep, that nerdy card game you’ve seen people playing at comic stores and conventions that’s not Yu-Gi-Oh. This is a game with intensely detailed lore, tons of characters, and a fascinating series of fantasy settings.

And, most importantly, the main characters have stunning costumes. Not just medieval armor, but naturalistic cloaks, steampunk-style suits, and flowing gothic dresses. Just a huge variety of interesting choices.

Basically, what I’m saying is if you want a challenge, a real project to sink your crafting teeth into, and a growing fanbase that will appreciate your creativity, this may be the franchise for you.

Magic is big on representation nowadays, so, regardless of who you are and what body type you may have, there’s likely a character that matches you. Though, of course, the beauty of cosplay is that it doesn’t matter if you don’t look like a character—you can still dress like them.

So, go out and be a Planeswalker. There are so many realities to explore.
